Voided Check

What is a voided check?

A voided check is a check rendered null. It is essentially a check with the word “VOID” written across a blank or partially written check. The word “VOID” indicates that the check cannot be accepted for payment. The word “VOID” also disables the check from being used as a blank check. In other words, the check cannot be cashed even if someone completes the check. If you make a mistake filling out a check, write “VOID” across it so the check cannot be cashed.

When is a voided check used?

Voided checks are used to provide banking information to set up electronic payments or deposits. The information shown on the check includes:

  • The routing number (financial institution and branch)
  • The account number (the checking account)
  • The check number (the check digit)

These numbers at the bottom of the check provide all the information needed to deposit or withdraw funds.

When you provide a voided check, the recipient enters the banking information from the check into their system. Depending on the business, a check, a photocopy, or the information may be sufficient. Sometimes businesses require a voided check to minimize errors when entering the information and to proof that it is your account. Other businesses will accept a photocopy of a voided check, and some will even take the information over the phone or online, without asking for a voided check.

Voided checks can be used to set up direct deposits. For example, your employer can pay you electronically so the funds are directly deposited to your account, eliminating the need for paper paychecks. To set up a direct deposit with your employer you have to provide them with a voided check because your employer will need your account information to get the money to the right place.

Voided checks can also be used to set up payments. For example, you can pay your mortgage automatically with electronic payments. Automatic electronic payments eliminate the need to write and mail checks, or log in to your bank’s online bill payment system to make a transfer. When automatic electronic payments are set up, the funds are automatically deducted from your account at the frequency indicated on the signed agreement authorizing the automatic payments.

How To Void A Check

How is a check voided?

Checks are easily voided by writing “VOID” across it. Use large letters and write the word “VOID” across the front of the check. Use a dark pen or marker, making sure you don’t write over the numbers at the bottom of the check. No need to write any other information on the check. Make a note on your register so you remember that the check was voided.

What if you don’t have any checks?

If you don’t have a check to void, there are other alternatives such as:

  • A counter check from your bank
  • A pre-printed deposit slip
  • A letter from your bank
