Muladhara: How To Balance The Root Chakra

This article describes how to balance Muladhara root chakra. A chakra is a focal point in the subtle body used in a variety of ancient meditation practices. Chakras have a direct impact on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of an individual.

Muladhara is the first chakra. The first chakra is located at the base of the spine and it includes the pelvic floor. In Sanskrit, the word Mula means root, and the word Adhara, means support. Therefore, another name for it is the root chakra.

This focal point is linked to your sense of safety and security. Balancing the root chakra is important because it creates the foundation for opening the other chakras, which are above it. For this reason, you feel grounded and safe when your basic needs are met.

Imbalances in the Root Chakra

If there is an imbalance in the root chakra you may experience anxiety disorders, fears, or nightmares. Physical manifestation of an imbalance in muladhara may manifest as elimination problems, or with issues with the lower back and the lower extremities. Also, eating disorders may also be a sign of a root chakra imbalance.

If your energy is blocked in this chakra it is limiting the flow of energy in your body potentially impacting your health, success in relationships or with money or in your career. Maybe you stress about trust matters in your relationships, or you don’t feel safe in your job. Perhaps you have insecurities about not having enough money, or you feel like you will never get ahead – these are all manifestations muladhara chakra issues.

Do you feel in control? Do you trust yourself to able to make good decisions? Are you confident that you will make the right choices? Do you feel like you have enough in life or are you always chasing after more, never feeling fulfilled?

The root chakra is all about stability in your life. It includes your basic needs such as food, water, shelter, and safety, as well as your more emotional needs such as letting go of fear. When these needs are met, you feel grounded and safe, and you tend to worry less day to day.

 

How to Balance Muladhara

When the root chakra is open, you feel a sense of stability and steadiness. A good way to open the root chakra is through practicing yoga, chanting mantras, visualizing colors and gem stones.  For example, practicing yoga asanas such as malasana, padmasana, janu sirsansana and pavanamuktasana, help to open and align the root chakra.

 

Energy Locks

Another way to open the chakra muladhara is by way of practicing mula bandha. Mula bandha is an energy lock of muladhara. Males can practice the root lock by contracting the area between the anus and the testes. On the other hand, females can practice mula bandha by contracting the muscles at the bottom of the pelvic floor, behind the cervix.

Chanting

Alternatively, chanting is a good way to open the root chakra. Certain sounds create vibrations are conducive for cells to work in synchronization. The mantra that corresponds to muladhara is the sound LAM.  Regardless of any meaning associated with the word LAM, the mantra is valued for the power created by its sound vibrations. The cleansing mantra is associated with sexuality, pleasure and creativity. If your energy is low, you suffer from low self-esteem or from adrenal fatigue, chant the mantra LAM to relieve stress-related ailments. To do this, sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes, take a deep breath in, and pronounce the sound LAM as you exhale. Repeat the mantra using your breath and notice a sense of calmness take over your body.

 

Colors

Another way to balance the chakras is by visualizing the color corresponding to chakra you want to open. For instance, to balance the root chakra visualize the color red. As you sit in a comfortable position and chant the mantra LAM, visualize the color red. This will help bring the root chakra into balance.

Finally, try placing colored gemstones near the area of the chakra while you practice the meditation described above.  Gemstones known balance the root chakra are garnet, red jasper, black tourmaline and blood-stone.
