Step 1

The first step is understanding why you want to do it. There are many reasons why people chose to become vegetarians, what is yours? However, the difference between a long-lasting change and quitting is connecting the right set of reasons to your decision in the first place. Thus, you have to be clear and committed, the motivation to stay on track will arise.

Step 2

The second step is to educate yourself on vegetarianism. In other words, read up and/or talk to other vegetarians. Appropriately planned vegetarian diets are nutritious and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. In addition, educate yourself on what constitutes an appropriately planned diet, and follow recommended guidelines on nutrition, fat consumption and weight control. Step 3

Next, start by cutting out red meat from your diet. Most people find it easier to slowly transition from partial vegetarianism to total vegetarianism. For instance, you may chose to try out being a partial vegetarian and avoid meat but may eat fish (pesco-vegetarian, pescatarian) or poultry (pollo-vegetarian). From there you may transition into becoming a lacto-ovo vegetarian. Lacto-ovo vegetarians do not eat meat, poultry, or fish, but do eat eggs and dairy products. There are two more variations of this type:

  • Lacto vegetarians: Eat no meat, poultry, fish, or eggs, but do consume dairy products.
  • Ovo vegetarians: Eat no meat, poultry, fish, or dairy products, but do eat eggs.

Then you are ready for total vegetarianism and you can become a vegan. Vegans do not eat meat, poultry, fish, or any products derived from animals, including eggs, dairy products, and gelatin.

Other tips to help you through the transition:

  • Telling friends and family – have a support system that keeps you accountable and motivated can be very helpful.
  • Commit yourself to a 40-day trial – you can form new habits in 40 days. If you commit yourself to not quitting, you are well on your way to creating a new habit.
  • Write about it – record your feelings and physical changes. Notice how your energy levels and mental clarity evolve.
